A plain file index beat a vector database for agent retrieval
Instead of a vector database, one team gave their agents a simple INDEX.md — one line per document — and let agents read the index before opening files. It turned out cheaper, fully debuggable by eye, and avoided the vaguely-related results vector search sometimes returns. The rule of thumb: reach for vectors only when the corpus is too big to eyeball.
